Scots Sweep Stars on Senior Day

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College softball team swept the Stephens College Stars on Saturday, 5-1 and 9-1.

Lyon moves to 25-8 on the season, 12-4 in the AMC. Stephens College goes to 2-22 on the year, 0-12 in the AMC.

Game One: Lyon 5, Stephens 1 
The hosts from Batesville wasted no time in this one as the Scots scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Megan Micke led off the frame with a leadoff single and stole second base the very next pitch. The Scots had runners on second and third with one out as Cheyenne Black came to the dish. Black drilled a single to left field, plating Micke and Harmon and giving the Scots a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, Dakota Smith pinch ran for Black and came around to score on a dropped fly ball by the Stars, giving Lyon a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

Lyon would tack on another run in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs in the frame, Megan Micke crushed a solo home run over the center field fence, extending Lyon's lead to four runs.

Stephens College responded with a run of their own in the third inning as Leira Acosta delivered an RBI double to left field, scoring Mariah Montoya from second base and trimming Lyon's lead to three.

The score would remain 4-1 in favor of Lyon until the bottom of the sixth inning. Riley Shaw led off the frame with a single to center field. Shaw advanced to second on an error by the Stars. After a sac bunt by Cheyenne Herrera moved Shaw over to third with one out, Siobhan Taylor executed a perfect push bunt to score Shaw from third and give the Scots a 5-1 lead after six innings of play.

Katelyn Platt kept the Stephens College hitters off balance all game and induced a pop out to Micke at short with two outs in the seventh to give the Scots a 5-1 victory over the Stars. Platt earned the complete game victory, while only giving up one run and striking out five. Offensively, Megan Micke paced the Scots as she tallied two hits, including a solo home run, stolen base, and an RBI in the contest.  

Game Two: Lyon 9, Stephens 1 (6 Innings)
The Stars got on the board first as they scratched a run across in the top of the first inning. After Macy McIntosh hit a double to right field, Maci Marshall delivered a 2-out RBI single, giving Stephens a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning.   

The Scots would answer right back. Megan Micke led off the frame with a bunt single and stole second on the very next pitch.  With two outs, Cheyenne Black crushed an RBI double down the left field line, knotting the game at one. Riley Shaw, then, followed up with a no-doubt 2-run home run over the right field fence, giving the Scots a 3-1 lead after one inning of play.

Lyon would score a run in each of the next two innings. In the second inning, Mikayla Mullen hit a one-out RBI single down the left field line, scoring Cheyenne Herrera from third and giving the Scots a 4-1 lead. In the third inning, Cheyenne Herrera delivered a two-out RBI single to left field, scoring Kendra Kelley and extending Lyon's lead to four.

The score would remain 5-1 in favor of Lyon until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Scots put runners on second and third with one out. Cheyenne Herrera, then, hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Riley Shaw from third and giving the Scots a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Scots opened the frame with a pair of hits. First, Mikayla Mullen led off with a double to left field. Next, Megan Micke legged out an infield single. With one out and runners on second and third, Addison Harmon delivered a sac fly into center field, plating Micke from third and extending Lyon's lead to six. The Scots were not done there, though, as Riley Shaw hit a deep fly ball into center field. The Stephens College outfielder dropped the fly ball allowing Faith Cornmesser and Dakota Smith to come around to score, earning the Scots a 9-1 run-rule victory over the Stars.  

Faith Cornmesser started the game in the circle for the Scots. She threw one inning, where she allowed one run and struck out one. Shyanne Pedroza relived Cornmesser in the second inning and threw the remaining five innings, while shutting the Stars out and striking out two. Offensively, Megan MickeRiley Shaw, and Mikayla Mullen led the way for the Scots. Micke totaled three hits, two runs scored, and three stolen bases. Shaw delivered two hits, including a 2-run home run and totaled four RBI's on the day. Mullen tallied two hits and one RBI in the contest.

UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots go on the road as they take on Freed-Hardeman University on Tuesday for a conference doubleheader with the first game starting at 4:00 p.m.
