No. 18 Lyon Splits Series with WWU

FULTON, Mo. – The Lyon College softball team concluded the road trip by splitting with William Woods University on Sunday afternoon.

Lyon moves to 19-6 on the season, 6-2 in the AMC. William Woods University falls to 6-13 on the year, 1-3 in the AMC.

Game One: William Woods 3, Lyon 2
The Scots wasted no time in this one as the visitors from Batesville scratched two runs across in the top of the first inning. With one out in the frame, Faith Cornmesser worked a six pitch walk. Addison Harmon followed it up with a single to left field. Next, Cheyenne Black slapped an RBI single to right field, scoring Cornmesser. Riley Shaw, then, placed a single to center, scoring Harmon and giving the Scots a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning.

The score would remain 2-0 in favor of the Scots until the bottom of the fourth inning. With no outs in the frame, WWU's Emma Walker delivered an RBI triple to right field, cutting the deficit in half. Later in the inning, Celeste Sermeno placed a perfectly executed squeeze bunt, scoring Walker and knotting the game at two. With two outs in the frame, Emily Robinnett delivered an RBI single, giving the Owls a 3-2 lead after four innings of play.

Heading into the top of the seventh, Lyon trailed 3-2. The Scots loaded the bases with two outs, but came up just short as WWU's Madison Ausfahl induced a fly out to end the game and earn the Owls a 3-2 victory in the first game of the day.

For the game, the Scots stranded 12 runners on base. Katelyn Platt pitched all six innings in this one as she gave up three earned runs, while striking out four batters. Offensively, Riley Shaw and Megan Micke led the charge for the Scots as each recorded two hits in the contest.  

Game Two: Lyon 3, William Woods 0 
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth. Megan Micke led off the frame by working a walk and stealing second base. After a Faith Conrmesser sac bunt advanced Micke to third with one out, Addison Harmon laid down an RBI bunt to plate Micke and give the Scots a 1-0 lead.  

In the sixth inning, Riley Shaw led off with a single to center. Libby Shipp came in to pinch run and immediately stole second base. After a sac bunt by Cheyenne Herrera put Shipp on third with one out, Siobhan Taylor placed a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to double Lyon's lead heading into the to the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Scots would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Cheyenne Black drilled a double to right center, scoring Faith Cornmesser and giving Lyon a 3-0 advantage.

The Owls brought the tying run up to bat with no outs, but Katelyn Platt shut the door on WWU's comeback bid and picked up her fourth save on the season as the Scots defeated the Owls by a score of 3-0. Faith Cornmesser started the game in the circle for the Scots and kept the Owls off balance as she struck out three batters, while only allowing two hits in her six innings of work. Offensively, Anna Beth Conditt paced the Scots as she tallied three hits in the contest.  

UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots return home to take on Williams Baptist University for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20.
