BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College men's basketball team erased a 32-27 halftime-deficit and outscored Freed-Hardeman, 35-18, to earn a 62-50 win over the Lions on Saturday inside Becknell Gymnasium. The game was part of the Play4Kay initiative, helping raise breast cancer awareness. Lyon picked up its second straight win and improved to 15-10 (9-8 American Midwest Conference), while FHU slipped to 5-21 (3-15 AMC).
Freed-Hardeman jumped out to a 14-3 lead over the Scots in the first eight minutes of the game before a three-pointer by Zalek Sharp sparked a Lyon College run. Eric Moses followed the Sharp three with a bucket of his own before Emir Sabic and Faris Verlasevic added to the comeback that brought the Scots back within five at 21-16. FHU extended its lead to double-digits once more before a bucket each by Ray Price, Moses and Sabic cut the deficit to five at the half.
The Lions continued to hold onto the lead until a pair of free throws by Price tied the game at 35-35 with 15:57 remaining. A free throw by Moses gave the Scots their first lead of the game in their next possession as it was all Lyon the rest of the way. Six straight points by Verlasevic with just under three minutes remaining gave the Scots their largest lead of the game at 62-45. FHU ended the game on a 5-0 run, but the Scots already put the contest out of reach.
Verlasevic tied his career-high with a game-high 23 points, while Price recorded his first-career double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds). Silas Clark was the lone Lion to score in double figures as he ended with 11.
The Scots will open up a three-game AMC road trip next week at Central Baptist College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
