WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The Lyon College men's basketball team and Williams Baptist battled back-and-forth in a see-saw affair on Thursday night in the Southerland-Mabee Center. After a three-pointer by Emir Sabic gave the Scots a 49-47 advantage with 12:16 left in the second half, Lyon held the lead the rest of the way and picked up a 79-72 win over the Eagles. With the win, Lyon improved to 14-10 (8-8 American Midwest Conference), while WBU fell to 8-14 (5-12 AMC).
The Eagles struck first against the Scots and took an 11-3 lead over Lyon five minutes into the game on a layup by Andrew Littleton. The Scots answered back with back-to-back three-pointers by Fairs Verlasevic and Sabic, followed by a tip-in by Blake Bradshaw to trim the deficit to four just three minutes later.
WBU went on another run to extend its lead to seven, only to see the Scots chip away once again. Sabic headlined the comeback with seven of the next nine points for the Scots to tie the game at 22-22 with just over seven minutes left in the first half. The two teams exchanged runs the rest of the half as WBU took a 38-33 lead into the half.
After a three-pointer by Verlasevic tied the game at 38-38, the two teams kept things close over the next eight minutes as neither side led by more than three points. A bucket each by Moses and Ray Price broke that streak as Lyon went up by six with just over 10 minutes remaining. Lyon extended its lead to seven points just a minute later and answered shot-for-shot with the Eagles the rest of the way to pick up the win.
Sabic and Bradshaw paced the Scots with a game-high 23 points each. Moses added 16 points, while Verlasevic chipped in 11. Travon Cobb finished with a team-high 20 points for the Eagles.
The Scots will return home to Becknell Gymnasium on Saturday as they host Freed-Hardeman in their Play4Kay game. Tip-off for Saturday's game is set for 3 p.m.
