BASEBALL SWEEPS MIDWEEK DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST BMC

Box Score (Game One) | Box Score (Game Two)

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College baseball team extended its current winning streak to nine games after sweeping a midweek doubleheader against Blue Mountain College on Wednesday afternoon at Scots Field. Lyon earned a 6-3 win in the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader before picking up a 9-8 walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap. Lyon improved to 11-2, while BMC fell to 6-7-1.

Game One: Lyon 6, BMC 3

Lyon and BMC played to a 1-1 tie after three innings in the books as both teams scored a run each in the second. BMC jumped ahead once again in the top of the fourth with a run before the Scots overtook the lead in the bottom half of the frame. An error by BMC opened up the frame before back-to-back singles by Ryan Clack and Zane Pritchard loaded the bases for the Scots. Reese Chovanec tied the game at 2-2 as he got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Dalton Ernest plated a pair with a two-run single to give the Scots a 4-2 advantage.

BMC pulled back within one in the top of the six on a solo home run by Latalo Newson before the Scots added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. A pair of one-out singles by Tristan Buschow and Chovanec opened up the rally before the pair moved up third on a ground out. A throwing error by the BMC defense plated Buschow and Chovanec and gave the Scots a 6-3 lead heading into the final frame. The three-run cushion was more than enough for Ethan Denney as he came in shut the Toppers down in order for his second save of the year.

Clack and Buschow collected two hits each in the game.

Brock Beacham improved to 3-0 on the bump as he allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out four over six innings pitched.

Game Two: Lyon 9, BMC 8

Lyon appeared as if it would run away with the nightcap after putting up six runs against the Toppers in the bottom of the second inning, but BMC slowly chipped away with two runs in the third and one more in the fourth.

The Scots extended their lead to 8-3 with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ernest opened up the frame with a bunt single and later came around to score after stealing second and two errant throws by BMC. Kylan Barnett followed with a solo home run – his first of the season – to give the Scots a five-run lead.

The Toppers rallied all the way back with five runs in the top of the seventh to knot the score at 8-8 before the Scots earned a walk-off win. With runners on second and third and one out in the inning, a wild pitch by the Toppers allowed Darius Anderson to score the game-winning run.

Barnett finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Alan West and Andrew Schnitzius also collected two hits each in the game.

Denney picked up the win in relief as he finished the top of the seventh inning.

The Scots will open up American Midwest Conference play this Sunday and Monday at home against William Woods. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon before concluding the series with a single nine-inning game on Monday at noon.
