Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Opens Tri-Match with Doubleheader Sweep of NWC

Game One: Lyon 9, NWC 0 (5 Innings)

The Scots struck first against SWC in the bottom of the first inning. After Megan Micke led off the inning with a single, she wound up on third base after stealing second and moving up an extra 90-feet after a ground out. Breanna Langford brought Micke home in the following at-bat with a single to center and gave the Scots an early 1-0 lead.

Lyon broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third. After Langford reached base on an error by NWC, Addison Harmon singled to put runners on first and second. Cheyenne Black came up next for the Scots and smacked a three-run home run over the fence in right. Melanie Mooney kept the inning going for the Scots with a single to center before she came home on an RBI-triple by Cheyenne Herrera. NWC tried to throw Herrera out at third on the play, but the throw sailed wide of the bag and allowed Herrera to scamper home and extended the Scots' lead to 6-0.

The Scots walked it off with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Black got the inning started with a one-out walk before Mooney reached on a single to left-center field. With two runners aboard, Lyon College head softball coach Elliott Sampley called upon Conditt to pinch hit. The moved worked out in the Scots' favor as Conditt belted a three-run, walk-off home run to give the Scots a 9-0 victory.

Mooney led the Scots offensively as she went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Katelyn Platt earned a complete-game victory in the circle for the Scots as she threw a one-hitter.

Game Two: Lyon 3, NWC 2

Once again, it was the Scots who found themselves with an early lead against NWC with two runs in the first inning in the nightcap. Faith Cornmesser hit a one-out solo home run to left before Harmon scored later in the inning on a Mikayla Mullen single to center.

After NWC put a run across in the top of the fourth inning, the Scots got the run back in the bottom of the fifth. Micke led off the inning with a single to right and moved into scoring position after stealing second. A sacrifice bunt by Cornmesser moved Micke up to third before Black singled her home to give the Scots a 3-1 advantage.

NWC pulled back within one late in the game after scoring a run in the top of the sixth. Jennifer Boeve doubled to center with one away in the inning before Vanessa Gomez brought her home with a single to left. That would be all NWC would get, however, as Shyanne Pedroza worked out of the inning before Platt came on in relief and closed the door in the seventh.

Pedroza earned the win in the circle after she allowed two runs (one earned) over six innings. Pedroza surrendered seven hits while striking out two. Platt shut NWC down in order in the seventh to earn the save.

Black and Mullen both recorded two hits each in the game for the Scots.

The Scots are set to play two games on Friday afternoon in the Lyon College Tri-Match. The Scots are set to face Peru State College at noon and NWC at 2 p.m.
