HANNIBAL, Mo. – The 21st-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team capped off a brief two-game road trip in the state of Missouri with a convincing, 72-52, win at Hannibal-LaGrange on Saturday. Lyon improved to 8-1 (5-0 American Midwest Conference), while HLG fell to 2-7 (0-4 AMC).
Hannibal-LaGrange hung with the Scots in the first quarter as the score was tied at 16-16 following the first 10 minutes of the contest. The second quarter was a different story, however, as Lyon scored the first seven points of the quarter. A steal and layup by
Madison Riley at the 5:08 mark gave the Scots a 29-19 lead before the Trojans cut the deficit to single-digits momentarily. A bucket by
Liz Henderson followed by a pair of scores each by
Jade Giron and
Katie Turner gave Lyon a 39-22 lead with just over two minutes left in the first half.
Alexis Moore gave the Scots their largest lead of the first half at 43-24 with a layup just before time expired.
The Scots continued to build upon their lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter as a jumper by Turner put Lyon ahead, 47-26. HLG climbed its way back into the game over the next several minutes from there as a three-pointer by Madisen Simpson cut the Scots' lead to 47-37. Lyon responded with a big run of its own as the Scots outscored the Trojans, 14-2, over the final 4:47 of the quarter.
Lyon took its largest lead of the game at 69-43 midway through the fourth quarter following a three-pointer by
Madi Pierce as the Scots put the game out of reach.
Riley led all scorers with a game-high 18 points for the Scots. Giron added 14 points, while Turner chipped in 12. Simpson led HLG with a team-high 16 points.
The Scots will return to action next Saturday and open up a four-game home stand against Philander Smith College. Tip-off for the Dec. 14 game is set for noon.
