PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. - The Lyon College men's wrestling team traveled to Tennessee today to compete against some of the NAIA's best teams in the country at the Smokey Mountain Duals. The Scots went toe-to-toe with two top-five opponents and a team receiving votes before besting Southwest Virginia Community College in a thrilling, 29-28, come-from-behind victory.
After coming up short against No. 5 Campbellsville University, (RV) Cumberland University, and No. 2 Reinhardt University, the Scots took the mat for a showdown against Southwest Virginia Community College. After falling behind by a score of 28-0, the Scots found their rhythm. Just 52 seconds into the 174 pound weight class, Derrick Top pinned SVCC's Scott Everding to trim Lyon's deficit to 16 points, 28-12. A forfeit and a Bruce Whitehead pin cut into SVCC's lead even more at 28-24. In the final match of the contest, Noah Wilson wrestled tremendously against SVCC's Ethan Roark. Wilson earned a victory via major decision, 14-1. This knotted the score at 28 apiece. Lyon won the tiebreaker to complete the impressive comeback over Southwest Virginia Community College, 29-28.
Up Next: Lyon will enjoy their Christmas Break before returning to the mat on Jan. 12 for a home showdown against the University of St. Mary. The dual between the Scots and Spires will begin on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. inside Becknell Gymnasium.
