TEXARKANA, Texas – Trailing, 55-47, with 7:39 left in the second half, the Lyon College men's basketball team outscored Texas A&M-Texarkana, 22-8, the rest of the way as the Scots rallied back and earned a 69-63 come-from-behind win over the Eagles on Thursday night.
Dominique Loyd sparked the comeback as he finished with a team-high 20 points, with 17 coming in the second half.
Lyon improved to 2-0 with the win, while TAMUT fell to 1-3 on the season.
Following a three-pointer by Tyriq Matthews that gave TAMUT the 55-47 lead, Loyd and the Scots began to work their way back into the game. Loyd accounted for the next 12 points in the game for the Scots as Lyon went on a 12-4 run to pull back within a single point at 60-59 with 2:56 remaining.
Jonathan Iliya and
Hunter Daley got into the scoring mix as both players hit a bucket each before a pair of free throws by Loyd gave the Scots a 65-60 advantage.
TAMUT made it a one-possession game on a three-pointer by Connor Ouellette from the corner before Daley and
Grant Patterson put the game away with a pair of free throws each to give the Scots a six-point victory.
The first half was evenly-matched by both sides as neither team led by more than four points until a three-point play by Loyd gave the Scots a 31-26 lead with 2:39 remaining in the first half. Desmond Kennedy hit a three-pointer on the next possession for TAMUT before Daley sank a bucket in the paint to put the score at 33-29. TAMUT ended the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 36-33 lead into the break.
Iliya chipped in 15 points, while Daley and
Zalek Sharp added 14 and 13, respectively. Kennedy led all scorers with a game-high 27 points for TAMUT.
The Scots will travel to Paragould, Ark., to face Crowley's Ridge College in non-conference action on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
