BATESVILLE, Ark. – Missouri Baptist (0-5, 0-2 AMC) hung with the 20th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team (4-1, 2-0 AMC) in the first half as the Scots held a 41-33 lead. Over the final two quarters, the Scots outscored the Spartans, 36-19, as Lyon earned a 77-52 American Midwest Conference victory on Saturday afternoon.
Lyon broke an 11-11 tie midway through the first quarter with a layup by
Madison Riley as the Scots went on to take their largest lead of the quarter at 15-11 following a pair of free throws by
Jade Giron. Missouri Baptist responded with a 5-0 run as the two teams went on to trade the lead before the score became tied at 18-18 on a layup by MBU's Megan Fassino with one minute left in the quarter. The Spartans found themselves ahead, 20-18, after the first quarter on a bucket by Taylor Norris.
Kaleah Davis sparked the Scots offensively at the start of the second quarter as she scored on a put-back before knocking down a three from the corner. Riley followed with a layup just 30 seconds later to give the Scots a 25-20 lead. MBU rallied back to tie the score three times midway through the quarter before another three-pointer by Davis opened up an 11-3 run to end the period for the Scots as Lyon led, 41-33.
Lyon limited MBU to just eight points in the third quarter as the Scots took advantage and extended their lead to 48-33 with 5:26 left in the period on a layup by Giron. A quick 6-0 run by MBU cut the deficit to single-digits, but a three-pointer by Giron pushed the lead back to double-digits as Lyon held a 55-41 lead after three quarters.
The Scots doubled up on the Spartans in the fourth quarter as Lyon outscored MBU, 22-11, in the final period.
Five Scots scored in double figures on Saturday, led by Giron's game-high 16 points. Riley chipped in 13, while Davis added 11.
Katie Turner and
Liz Henderson finished with 10 points each for the Scots.
Kimberley Shaw led MBU with 10 points.
The Scots will return to action on Tuesday night at Philander Smith College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
