MARSHALL, Mo. – Missouri Valley College used two second-half goals to defeat Lyon College by a score of 3-1 Friday afternoon.
Lyon concludes the season with a 15-6-1 overall record, while Missouri Valley College improves to 13-6 and will take on St. Thomas University (Fla.) for a spot in the NAIA Men's Soccer Championship Final Site in Irvine, California.
GAME FLOW
The Scots got on the scoreboard first as Lyon earned a free kick in the 16
th minute. The cross was deflected and fell to the feet of
Marcos Fernandez. Fernandez struck a shot from seven yards away off the right post and into the back of the net, giving Lyon a 1-0 lead. The Vikings responded with a goal of their own late in the first half. In the 42
nd minute, Luka Gluscevic took a free kick and snuck a shot into the back of the net, knotting the match at one as the halftime whistle sounded.
In the second half, the match remained tied until the 70
th minute. The Vikings sent a cross into the box. The cross was deflected right to Missouri Valley's Ruben Jimenez. Jimenez headed the ball past the outstretched arms of Alamos and into the back of the net, giving the Vikings a 2-1 advantage. Just two minutes later, Ruben Jimenez played a long ball to Dominic Newton. Newton slid a shot into the back of the net, extending MVC's lead to two. The Scots attempted to respond, but were unable and fell to Missouri Valley College by a score of 3-1 in the Opening Round of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship.
