POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – Three Scots scored in double figures, led by Katie Turner's new career-high of 22 points, but the 20th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team came up just short against No. 3 (NAIA Division II) College of the Ozarks, 74-62, in the final game of the CofO Classic. Turner also grabbed 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
College of the Ozarks improved to 6-1 on the year with the win, while the Scots fell to 2-1.
Lyon and CofO appeared evenly matched in the opening quarter on Saturday afternoon as neither team led by more than two points until a jumper by Annie Noah gave the Lady Bobcats an 8-4 lead at the 5:15 mark. The Scots responded with back-to-back buckets by Turner and Jade Giron to knot the score at 8-8 two minutes later. The two teams went on to exchange the lead until CofO ended the quarter on a 5-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer by Abby Oliver to give the Lady Bobcats a 14-10 lead after the first break.
The second quarter proved to be the biggest difference in the game as CofO outscored Lyon, 20-13, in the period and took a 34-23 advantage at the half.
The Lady Bobcats extended their lead to as many as 15 in the opening minutes of the third quarter but the Scots rallied back to trim the deficit to single-digits. Giron sparked the comeback with a three-pointer ahead of a pair of buckets by Liz Henderson and a pair of three-pointers by Madison Riley to pull the Scots back within six at 43-37 with 5:22 left in the quarter. The comeback by the Scots forced the Lady Bobcats to call a timeout. CofO responded with a 7-2 run out of the timeout to extend its lead back to double-digits as the Lady Bobcats led, 54-43, after three quarters.
The Scots attempted another comeback at the start of the fourth quarter as Turner accounted for five-straight points for Lyon to start the period to trim the deficit to six at 54-48. That would be as close as Lyon would get the rest of the way, however, as the Lady Bobcats held off the Scots' late comeback attempt.
Giron and Riley chipped in 15 points each for the Scots. Oliver led the Lady Bobcats with a team-high 21 points.
"Their offense was much sharper than our defense today," said Lyon College head women's basketball coach Tracy Stewart-Lange. "We had too many breakdowns and mistakes on that end of the floor. I really liked how hard we competed today."
"We did a lot of good things this weekend but go home with a lot to take back to the practice floor before conference play begins next week," finished Stewart-Lange.
The 20th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team will open up American Midwest Conference play next week. The Scots will host Lindenwood-Belleville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Missouri Baptist on Saturday at 12 p.m.
