COLUMBIA, Ky. - The Lyon College men's wrestling team traveled to Kentucky for the Lindsey Wilson Duals on Saturday. The Scots competed in five duals against (RV) West Virginia Tech, Bluefield College, No. 7 University of the Cumberlands, No. 9 Southeastern University (Fla.), and No. 4 Lindsey Wilson College.
The Scots began the day with a dual against (RV) West Virginia Tech. After Roger Gasmann earned six points for Lyon via forfeit in the 157 pound weight class, Derrick Top squared off with Cameron Crislip. Top executed flawlessly and defeated Crislip, 12-4. Bruce Whitehead, John Bentley, and Noah Wilson tallied six points apiece for the Scots. Whitehead and Wilson pinned their respective opponent, clinching a 28-16 victory over West Virginia Tech on Saturday.
The Scots battled all afternoon with three top-10 teams in the country– No. 4 Lindsey Wilson College, No. 7 University of the Cumberlands, and No. 9 Southeastern University (Fla.). However, the top-10 squads proved to be too much for the Scots today. John Bentley led Lyon in these three duals as he won via pin against Zach Malone of the University of the Cumberlands.
Lyon concluded the day with a dual against Bluefield College. In the 165 pound weight class, Derrick Top earned six points for the Scots as he pinned Joseph Dudley just 49 seconds into the match. Bruce Whitehead earned the forfeit in the 184 pound weight class, while Noah Wilson defeated Omega Webb by a score of 10-1.
Coach's Corner: "It's tough enough when you wrestle three of the top-10 teams in the country. It is even tougher, though, when you have to leave half your kids at home due to illness or injuries. Our kids came out strong in our first dual of the day, though, and took care of business with a 28-16 win over West Virginia Tech. Our next three duals saw us wrestle the 4th, 7th, and 9th ranked teams in the country. The results weren't pretty but we came out and battled, winning several hard fought matches.
We are looking forward to getting back to work to correct some of the mistakes we made, as well as,getting some of our other kids healthy and back in our lineup. We are excited about our upcoming dual with Arkansas Baptist College. I have never done a lunch matinee before, but am looking forward to it!" - Coach Tom Erikson
Up Next: Lyon returns home to host Arkansas Baptist College in the first home dual of the season on Wednesday, November 20th at 12:30 p.m.
