Scots Come Up One Point Short At TWU

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Lyon College football team and Texas Wesleyan played a tight ball game all Saturday afternoon, but it was the Rams who came out on top in the end, defeating the Scots by a score of 21-20.

Lyon fell to 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the SAC following the loss, while Texas Wesleyan improved to 2-7 overall and 2-5 in the SAC.

Game Flow

After a quiet first quarter by both teams, the offenses began to roll in the second quarter. A big fourth-down conversion kept the opening drive of the quarter alive for the Rams as Gregory Blaser rushed for 19 yards on a 4th-and-6. Texas Wesleyan quarterback Donavan Isom began to take over the drive for the Rams as he completed passes of 12, 20, 14 and 10-yards, with the final pass finding Collier Ricks in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown to give TWU a 7-0 lead.

It was the Scots' turn to break into the scoring column on their next drive. After a rush each by Spencer Childress and Jared Puaman, a pass interference call put the Scots inside Rams' territory. Childress then found Jeremiah Bigham for a 15-yard pass before Puamau picked up 25 yards on the ground to put the Scots at the TWU one-yard line. Childress once again found Bigham with a short pass to knot the score at 7-7.

The score held at 7-7 until the Scots' final drive of the half. A 19-yard pass from Childress to Parker put the Scots inside field-goal range as Ignacio Gomezconnected on a 41-yard field goal to give Lyon a 10-7 lead at the break.

Both defenses held firm to begin the third quarter as the two teams would exchange punts. Midway through the third quarter, Texas Wesleyan was able to string a drive together and come out with points to regain the lead. Isom connected with Brandon Rolfe on a pair of 30-plus yard passes, with the second one going for 32 yards and a touchdown to give the Rams a 14-10 lead.

As they did in the first half, the Scots once again answered a Rams' score with one of their own on their next possession. A 26-yard run by Titus Nelsonopened up the drive before a pair of rushes each by Childress and Puamau flipped the field and put the Scots inside Rams' territory. Childress got the call one more time and found paydirt from one yard out to give the Scots a 17-14 advantage. Gomez would hit on a 20-yard field goal as time expired in the quarter to extend the Scots' lead to 20-14 heading into the final quarter.

With time winding down in the game, the Rams came up with one final scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter. A 17-yard pass from Ison to Rolfe followed by a 12-yard rush by Jermarcus Jones were a pair of key plays in the drive before Isom capped it off with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Collier Ricks.

  • Childress completed 10-of-23 passes for 127 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
  • Puamau led the Scots in rushing as he picked up 79 yards on the ground on 13 attempts.
  • Sam Taylor finished with a team-high 13 total tackles, including 3.0 tackles-for-loss and 0.5 sacks.
  • Isom completed 21-of-39 passes for 240 yards with three touchdowns for TWU.

The Scots will return home for their season finale on Nov. 10 against Texas College. The Nov. 10 game will also be noted as Senior Day for the Scots with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
