BATESVILLE, Ark. – It took an extra five minutes to decide a winner between the Lyon College men's basketball team and Park as the two teams headed to overtime tied at 49-49. In the end, it was the host Pirates who pulled out a 60-57 win over the Scots on Thursday night. Lyon fell to 4-3 (2-1 American Midwest Conference), while Park improved to 4-4 (2-1 AMC).
The two teams exchanged leads to open up the extra period before Park broke a 53-53 tie with a 6-0 run to take a 59-53 advantage over the Scots with 15 seconds left in the game. The Scots pulled back within two after a pair of free throws each by Ray Price and Chave Zackery, but a free throw by Jacob Kline clinched the game for the Pirates.
Lyon opened up the game strong in the first half as Eric Moses and Blake Bradshaw provided the Scots with a bucket each before Emir Sabic and Antanas Krimelis drilled a three each to give Lyon a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes. The score remained the same until five straight points by the Pirates pulled Park within three with 11:07 left in the half. The Scots regained their rhythm offensively late in the half and extended their lead to nine at 25-16 following a three-pointer by Moses with 1:49 remaining in the first half. Zach Rutland would add a pair of free throws for Park, but Lyon held a 25-18 advantage at the break.
Lyon continued to hold its lead until midway through the second half when Park went on an 8-0 run, capped off by a three by Rutland to tie the game at 30-30. The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way until the score was tied at 49-49 at the end of regulation.
Sabic led the Scots with 18 points, while Moses chipped in 15. Zackery grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the loss. Blue Johnson led the Pirates with a game-high 22 points.
The Lyon College men's basketball team will take a break from conference play and travel to Springdale, Ark., for a non-conference game at Ecclesia College on Monday.
