BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College men's basketball team jumped out to a 33-19 halftime-lead and went on to defeat Williams Baptist, 64-55, in an American Midwest Conference matchup inside Becknell Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The Scots improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference with the win, while WBU dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the AMC.
Williams Baptist used the three ball to its advantage in the opening minutes of the first half as the Eagles hit six three-pointers in the first eight minutes to take a 17-15 lead over the Scots. Lyon locked down defensively from there and found some holes in the Eagles' zone defense as Eric Moses knotted the score with a bucket before Faris Verlasevic gave Lyon a 19-17 advantage with a jumper on the Scots' next possession. The Scots continued to hold Williams Baptist cold from the field as the Eagles shot 28-percent (7-for-25) in the first half and ended the first 20 minutes on a 14-2 run to take a 33-19 lead at the break.
Lyon opened up the second half with an 8-0 run before a pair of free throws by Joao Preto at the 15:31 mark ended a nine-minute scoreless drought for the Eagles. WBU managed to cut the deficit to 14 points at 45-31, but a three-pointer by Zalek Sharp followed by a pair of threes by Emir Sabic pushed the Scots' lead back up to 21 at 54-33 with 7:43 left to play. The Scots continued to hold a double-digit lead over Williams Baptist until the Eagles pulled back within nine in garbage time.
Sabic finished with a game-high 23 points to lead the Scots offensively, while Moses recorded his first double-double of the season (12 points, 13 rebounds). Briheam Anthony led the Eagles with 16 points on the night.
The Scots will have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Parkville, Mo., on Thursday night to play Park in another AMC matchup at 7:30 p.m.
